Asbury Prayer Ministry

The Asbury United Methodist Church Prayer Ministry involves many areas. What originated as a list of members who passed along requests via the telephone later evolved into a single intercessory prayer group and has taken many additional avenues. The ones listed below are only a beginning of what this important ministry will become and we welcome your involvement.

Upper Room Intercessory Prayer

This ministry involves a group of people of all ages who make a commitment to a specific time to pray for all prayer requests. These requests are obtained from various sources including a private telephone line dedicated for this purpose. The room where this prayer takes place is locked and secure so it remains private. Each member of the group is trained by others on the team and the confidential requests are not shared with anyone. There are periodic meetings of all the Upper Room Intercessors to discuss ways in which to improve and add to the overall ministry as this prayer team also oversees many of the other prayer groups.

Prayer with the Pastors

This team prays with the pastors on Sunday morning before the early service on a rotational basis of once a month. One does not have to be involved in other areas of the prayer ministry to do this. There is no training involved for praying with the pastors.

Email Prayer Team

The internet becomes the communicator of this group. It is the largest “intercessory” part of the ministry as it involves the most people. As the prayer chain begins, the team leader receives the request in the church office and posts it on the internet. This goes out to the e-mail addresses of those participating. They are non-confidential requests and anyone can email or call the church office to get on the e-mail list.  Send your  email requests to the church office. Or you may submit your prayer requests online through our prayer room. Click here to go to the Asbury Prayer Room!

Prayer Shawl & Baby Blanket Ministry

This is a group of volunteers who knit or crochet shawls or lap blankets for new babies, the homebound, those who are ill, or those simply going through a rough time in life and need comfort and prayers. The knitters and crocheters pray for the recipients as they prepare the shawls. They are then dedicated and blessed by the church congregation and delivered. There are many ways to be involved, including preparation of the shawls, purchasing yarn, and delivery.

Prayer Walk

Living life for Christ involves a daily walk with Him.  The prayer guide provides a focus for each of the gardens and memorials in our Prayer Garden to strengthen our daily walk with God; keep our church and all of its ministries surrounded by prayer; and the many needs of our community, country, and world before our Father.  Through the intentional activity of your prayer walk, God’s work will be revealed around you and those you pray for are sure to be blessed. This ministry begins in the Prayer Garden behind the church. Prayer Walk Guides are available in the Prayer Garden for your use. If you would like to print the prayer guide at your home and bring it with you, please feel free to click this link. It is in the form of a booklet, so you will have to fold in half and put together after printing.

Youth Prayer Cards

Every Wednesday evening during “The Word” Youth Bible Study, our youth collect and distribute prayer cards within the group. Each prayer card has a name of a church family member printed on it. Each youth goes around the group circle, reads aloud the name of the person they are praying for that week and the group then closes with a group prayer for all of those names that will be prayed over until the youth meet again. The prayer cards are then mailed to that person. This ministry has been in place since 2005 and plans are to continue for many years as a prayer outreach from our youth.

Children

Children receive a prayer cube and a prayer journal to keep throughout the year to write down personal prayers, joys and concerns. Every week that the children meet, they are encouraged and welcome to share these prayer requests.

The prayer garden is utilized by having occasional lessons on Sunday mornings throughout the year that focus on the importance and the power of prayer. The children have the opportunity to see our prayer garden and use it for a serious, quiet meditative moment.

Open Invitation

The Prayer Ministry invites those who are interested in praying for others to join us. If you feel this is an area in which you would like to participate, please contact Team Coordinator, Linda Tyrone or the church office at 746-5349  to become a part of this heart warming ministry.
